Our design intent for the Clubhouse was to infuse the upscale airport lounge with New York City’s downtown style and energy. There are seven distinct areas within the lounge space, each one with a different feel and a unique lighting approach. Notable decorative features such as the glowing mirror-crystal at the center bar or the modern table lamps in the Origami Lounge identify each space and combine to create a landscape of exciting options for patrons.

Sought-after fashion label, Proenza Schouler, chose to establish their home in the Upper East Side of Manhattan on Madison Avenue. The lighting design caters to the store’s juxtaposition of intimate and refined by enveloping the customer in light from the moment they walk in, creating a sense of consistency in a series of contrasting spaces. Lighting fixtures hidden within the architectural details lead visitors through a space enveloped in dark wood, past a stairwell that serves as a “palate cleanser,” and into a space finished with textured pre-cast concrete.

Focus Lighting worked closely with the architects at H3 Hardy Collaboration and the Intrepid’s in-house exhibit and aircraft restoration team to provide a dramatic environment for the Space Shuttle Enterprise in the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum.

One of the challenges involved was creating a rich backdrop for the 150,000-pound monument to space travel – the first of the 6 space shuttles ever made. The lighting design team created a 4-foot long replica of the Space Shuttle and pavilion to study various lighting schemes and properly gauge the large scale of the shuttle. By testing five interior tent colors, the team was able to demonstrate that a rich blue backdrop provided the desired dramatic contrast with the stark white Space Shuttle.

The Enterprise is illuminated by (130) 70-Watt PAR30 Metal Halide accents located on (8) custom built light towers. The surrounding “Blue Horizon Line” is created with (380) linear feet of 3-lamp T8 fluorescent striplights with “night blue” color filters, carefully concealed behind the perforated perimeter walls.

The exhibit allows visitors to walk under the 137-foot long Enterprise which hovers over the ground at a mere ten feet.

As the entry piece at the Boffo Show House, Focus Lighting’s interactive installation – “Cloud” – unifies the four Show House experiences by ushering guests in with a veil of ever-changing color overhead. The LED nodes illuminating the 200 tubes and uplighting the ceiling above the installation’s 16 wooden discs employ infrared sensors that allow “Cloud” to process the movement beneath it. As visitors enter the 35-foot long hallway, a dynamic shift in color springs ahead of them, cycling randomly to one of 12 shows, each with themes derived from nature. The light also becomes more dynamic as it senses increased activity within the hallway, giving “Cloud” a life of its own.

“Reflect” is a permanent light-based installation in the Stephen P. Clark Government Center lobby inMiami. Focus Lighting collaborated with artist Ivan Toth Depeña to develop the art piece which is commissioned by Miami-Dade Art in Public Places.

Focus Lighting and Depeña custom designed five thirteen-foot tall LED light boxes, between 6 and 8 feet wide, to be installed throughout the lobby space. The light boxes were programmed to display abstract reflections of passers-by using data collected from custom camera tracking software developed by Focus Lighting.

The installation seeks to engage the visitors and promote a sense of community through “group interactivity and high-tech playfulness.” To achieve this, Focus Lighting programmed the boxes to be responsive to multiple factors. Colors vary by time of day and the scale of the “pixels” corresponds to the visitors’ distance from the box. When there is no movement within their vicinity, the light boxes replay animations from previously recorded interactions with visitors. Despite these abstractions, the visitors’ “reflections” are of accurate scale and proportion so that they can easily recognize the forms as their own.
