The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore

During their stay at this extraordinary facility, the youngsters served by the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore are encouraged to become explorers on a journey to healing and knowledge. The architecture was created to be a clear reminder of our connection to the whole of the universe through references to the micro and macro cosmic worlds we inhabit.

Upon entering, the visitor is greeted by a curved, backlit frosted glass reception desk (representing the planet of Jupiter) behind which is a 28″ long glass mural, created with varying degrees of translucent paints. The mural is made to glow from within by illuminating the cavity behind with a continuous wall receded PAR20 strip light. Front lighting from a continuous PAR38 strip is hidden in an adjacent cove brings out the richness of the mural colors as well as the deep clue wall adjacent to the mural.

The large amber gelled, fluorescent, uplit cove represents the sun. Custom curved PAR 38 socket strips in ceiling coves transform columns into shafts of light emanating from the sun. The end result is a warm and inviting atmosphere that succeeds both in comforting the hospital’s many young patients and in inspiring them to think- temporarily taking their minds off of their troubles.
